* EVEN SLIGHT WARMING BRINGS EXTREME HEAT EVENTS:
We are presently experiencing a shift in the normal distribution of average temperature and extreme events. From 1951 through 1980 cold and heat events were approximately equal. The decade of 2001 - 2011 shows the bell curve (gaussian curve below) of normal distribution has skewed to the right with significantly more heat events than cold events. The area of Earth's surface experiencing warmer than historical averages has increased by a factor of 10. More of the Earth's surface is experiencing above average warming and there and there are more and more heat extremes and fewer cold extremes. This has taken place with an overall global warming of only 0.8 degrees Celsius or 1.4 degrees F since the preindustrial age. Most of that change has taken place since 1970. (Shell climate advisor David Hone's blog does a good job explaining this trend)
BMR Vol. 1, Ed. 7: July 17, 2014
NOAA: May was the hottest on record. June was also the hottest global June temperature on record. The trend continues as the southwest U.S., Australia, north Africa, Greenland, and Mediterranean Europe experience continued hot and dry. This is all happening before El Nino has begun in the Pacific. These data show the greatest departure from the norm since records began. Regardless of the month, this is the hottest the global ocean has ever been in recorded history at 62.7 degrees fahrenheit. Records go back 134 years and this month marks the 352nd consecutive month that was hotter than the norm.
